Introduction: Mental health is an important part of our lives. It means that an individual is able to live independently and to deal appropriately with the problems that he faces in his life. People with mental disorders are still stigmatized. Stigma has a negative impact on the current state of the individual, his treatment, and subsequent rehabilitation. The promotion of mental health has an important role. By raising the awareness of people with regard to this issue, we boost their knowledge and understanding of the state of individuals with mental disorders, which leads to fewer stigmas. Psychiatric nursing plays an important role in promoting positive mental health and cooperating in treatment and rehabilitation. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to define the importance of mental health promotion for decreasing stigma in the wider society. Methods: The thesis was written with a descriptive method of work. Foreign and home literature was searched through various databases, such as Pubmed/Medline, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, Google Scholar, COBISS.SI Cooperative Online Bibliographic System and the Digital Library of the University of Ljubljana (DiKUL). The thesis contains 33 Slovenian and foreign articles in the time period from 2005 to 2018. Results: Stigma interferes with employment, independent living, and health of people with mental health disorder. With the help of marketing campaigns, they achieved minor improvements in destigmatization in the wider society. In the promotion of mental health, the nurses have an important role. It is achieved with mental health promotion that more people are aware of it and, consequently, the possibility of stigmatizing people with mental disorders is reduced. Discussion and conclusion: Stigmatizing people with mental disorders has negative consequences. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously perform activities of mental health promotion at the systemic level and raise the awareness of the general public.
