Master's thesis focuses on the purpose of the popular culinary event »Odprta kuhna« and its actual use (the relationship between commercialism and sociability), typology of users (interaction between users and service providers), impact of event »Odprta kuhna« on public life in Ljubljana and location’s role as a public venue (fixedness and mobility of venues). In the beginning of the research, I assume the influence of event »Odprta kuhna« on the operation of the Ljubljana’s central grocery market at Pogačarjev trg in Ljubljana, as an urban public space, and the surrounding locations. I assume that the venue of the market allows for diversified happenings. Key relevance is shown in the sense of happenings and the venue in the establishment of a modern understanding of public in the physical space. While researching the venue, I define symbolism, occasionality, distinctiveness and market happenings. The latter is analyzed on a theoretical and empirical basis (interviews), with emphasis on exploration of public space, revitalization, food trends and importance of food, location (Pogačarjev trg), city market, event »Odprta kuhna« and its visitors (eating habits outside the home, »eating out«).
