In 1992 started the decline of national states and new forms of government emerged, in like manner in the subregional areas, on national borders within the European Union. Cross-border governance is needed on a daily basis, due to the growing territorial interdependence. Cooperation between border regions is becoming crucial for ensuring multilevel governance in such new fuctional subregional areas. Frankfurt an der Oder in Slubice are an important subregional area since 2007, when Poland entered the Schengen zone. Since then, cross-border collaboration started to grow each year, and the main actors from both sides of the Oder river have started to create shared institutions, events and build the common cultural heritage. Cities with various day-to-day projects affect everyday life of people with the help of cooperation between the civil society, promotion of a regional economy and collaboration with the European Union.
