One of the biggest problems in Vipava valley is hurricane wind bora, which can blow with the speed up to 200 km/h anf therefore causes large damage in agriculture. Green windbreaks, formed by long, thin lines of trees and shrubs, are a possible solution. The main goal of these windbreaks is reducing wind speed, but there are many other positive effects too, e.g. reducing wind erosion and water evaporation, protection from noise, pollution and snow, they can be shelter for wild animals etc. The most appropriate species for windbreaks are native species of decidous trees, but the wetness of soil must also be taken into account. It is important that the green windbreaks are carefully planned and planted densely enough for the desired effect. The green windbreaks were very widespread in the Vipava Valley, but have nearly dissapeared becouse of intensive agriculutre, agricultural machinery and land consolidation in the 1980s. Historical fotographs of the Vipava Valley allow us to track changes in green windbreaks that have occurred over the years and they may lead to re-establish this kind of windbreaks as much as possible.
