Children are said to enjoy illustrated stories, which they recognize even before they are able to speak. Pictures attract and they start »to read« them which is the main purpose of that kind of literature that wants to express it's character by indicating it as a picture book or an illustrated book. They are both a combination of two level communication, verbal or visual which interact.
The aim of the illustration is to contribute to easier understanding of the content as well as giving it a deeper meaning. A Picture book has followed the development stages of children in wide sense since early pre-reading and pre-school phases. It strives to take into the account the age of its user, adapting through various phases of child’s development stages in accordance with the verbal capacity and the fine arts. Illustrated books are intended for children in elementary school. The illustrations should be implemented by illustrations as it is intended to include readers into demanding outer and inner world.
The purpose of the diploma thesis was to design and prepare suitable illustrations for illustrated book “Alfa”, authored by Vlasta Grintov and to prepare a corporate identity for the book content and its illustrations. The goal of the thesis was to take in consideration all demands and requirements of graphic prepress, which should enable quality printing of the illustrated book “Alfa”.
The content of the theoretical part of the diploma thesis defines picture-book, it studies the relation between the word and image and internal design of the textual and image part, it defines the illustration and its purpose. A quality picture book is the one where illustrator defines the text, so that the text and the images form unified entity. Since proper graphic prepress is crucial, digitalization of graphic image elements is described in the thesis. The whole work also includes an overview of vector and bitmap graphic properties.
The experimental part of the diploma thesis consists of step-by-step depiction of illustrated book production. The analyses of the content and the graphic prepress of Vlasta Grintov's story and a detailed presentation of drawn illustrations with graphic prepress of certain text, and image elements for illustrated book are presented.
