Abstract

Title:
Colourfulness of surfaces – a research of glazes in ceramics
Abstract:
In my BA thesis I will be researching the technology and nature of glazes. Glazes are strongly connected with the visual characteristics of ceramics but also with its usability. In the theoretical part of my thesis I will begin with writing about the history of glazes, then I will continue with defining some of the elementary ingredients that compose it. In the practical part I will mix glazes with recipes from the ceramics book, but I will also mix some of them on my own. I will use different methods of glaze application onto ceramics surface. Later on I will present the key temperatures during the firing. The selection of glaze colours will be based on colours that can be seen in the river Soča. Most of the time these are the shades of turquoise, green and blue, but also brown and grey, especially after the rain. Seeing a colour is actually a mental process. Their evaluation is often very subjective and connected with current circumstances. To achieve a feeling of colourfulness it is more important to establish innovative relations between colours than using a huge amount of them. Artistic colour harmony is made when the colours are intentionally chosen in an order to destroy the natural balance between them. This leads to a certain optical tension.
