The thesis looks for ways for design to improve the situation of asylum seekers in Slovenia, with focus on asylum seekers stationed in the asylum home Ljubljana. Trough cooperation with non-governmental organization Institute for African studies field observations were conducted in the asylum home. Conclusions from the observations were the basis for the design stage, which was split in two parts. The identified main problems of asylum seekers were long processing time, lack of free time activities and lack of knowledge in the process. Therefore one part of the design stage was focused on designing a wholesome service for asylum seekers. The result of this was a year round activities plan that emphasizes empowerment and active spending of free time. The focus of the other part of the design stage was to design objects the asylum seekers could build themselves. The design had emphasis on usability, purpose and aesthetics. The results of this work were three designed workshops for making flower pots (and planting), bags and crochet toys. For testing purposes two flower pots, five bags and two crochet toys were made.
