The aim of the thesis is to analyse the impact of landscape heterogeneity on attractiveness of space for tourism based on the landscape unit of Vipava valley, a highly diverse and interesting area from geographic and landscape point of view. Tourism is becoming increasingly important in Vipava valley due to its various cultural and natural attractions which have the potential to improve the development of the area. The attractiveness of space in a domain of tourism is one of main characteristics of a space that attracts tourists and tourism as an activity. Landscape heterogeneity is a combination of some or all of the following elements of heterogeneity: terrain, waterscapes or water flows, vegetation features and cultural transformations. landscape heterogeneity of the area was evaluated thorough those categories. Vipava valley was found to be very rich in landscape heterogeneity in general, which is mostly connected to the terrain configuration. This configuration has a big impact on the intensity of the use of land. The connection between landscape heterogeneity and attractiveness for tourism was analysed through tourist preferences: a survey for tourist workers and a public opinion photo-survey in which the participants were evaluating the attractiveness of various scenes with different degree of landscape heterogeneity. The results of both surveys show a positive effect of landscape heterogeneity on attractiveness for tourism. The presence of water bodies, natural preservation and recognisability of the landscape were also identified as having a positive impact on the attractiveness. In order to provide better conditions for development of tourism, we propose preservation of traditional uses, a parcelling based on small parcels of land and revitalisation of potentially degraded areas.
