The aim of the research entitled Augmentative and Alternative Communication of a Person with Cerebral Palsy was to present the communication profile of a 16 years old adolescent with cerebral palsy and a moderate mental disorder. She uses an eye-gaze controlled communication device for communication and interaction with others. We also wanted to evaluate the progress of her communication during the 5 month period of speech and language therapy.
For this purpose two measurement instruments were used. A semi-structured interview with adolescent’s speech and language therapist was carried out. The communication matrix was also filled out by adolescent’s speech and language therapist, twice in 5 month interval.
The results of the study showed that the adolescent also uses other means of communication beside an eye-gaze controlled communication device, especially body movements, eye-gaze and vocalization. Which type of communication she uses in a given situation depends on various factors (especially co-speaker).
The results also showed the greatest progress in the field of language - two or multiple word sentences that the adolescent started to use in this 5 month period of time for various purposes.
