Introduction: Breastfeeding is a physiological way of feeding a child with breastmilk. Breastmilk contains all the nourishment and protective substances necessary for the healthy growth and development of a child. The mothers’ decision on whether to breastfeed their child or not depends on previous knowledge regarding its benefits. This information is available in different health education sources, including printed works, an example of which is the booklet Uspešno dojenje za dobro zdravje otrok in mater (Sucessful breastfeeding for a healthy mother and child). These sources are often written in an unintelligible way, rendering them ineffective. The comprehension of written sources does not pertain only to their content but also to their design and content presentation. It is important to adhere to the rules of writing such texts regarding the content, language, organization, alignment and design of the text and illustrations. Methods: The descriptive quantitative research method was used in this paper. A survey of literature in both Slovene and English was conducted. Literature was found through the databases CINAHL, Medline (PubMed), Cochrane. To gather information necessary for our research we used a questionnaire made with the help of the internet portal EnKlikAnketa. The survey was carried out between 10 October 2017 and 10 November 2017. The gathered results were analysed with the help of the internet site EnKlikAnketa and the computer programme Microsoft Office Excel. Results: 167 mothers between the ages of 20 and 42 took part in the survey. The findings show that the majority of mothers first acquire the booklet in the maternity hospital. Furthermore, while all maternity hospitals in Slovenia hand out the booklet, not all mothers who give birth there receive it. Three fifths of mothers scored its usefulness on a scale of 1 to 5 as 4 useful and half of them found it helpful in finding the answers to some, but not all, of their questions. Regarding its comprehensibility, 66 % of mothers labelled it as comprehensible. Only 17 % said that the medical staff recommended the booklet when discussing breastfeeding. Discussion and conclusion: In order to provide more effective and comprehensible health educational materials on breastfeeding in the clinical environment for the target readers, additional research regarding their evaluation needs to be carried out. We would have to grade the level of the materials’ legibility and comprehension using separate scales and also their comprehensibility by readers.
