Abstract
Podatke sem pridobila v kvalitativni raziskavi z intervjuvanjem staršev.

Title:Views of parents about the importance of acquiring knowledge and skills in home economics education
Abstract:
Home economics education plays an important role in improving the quality of life for individuals and families alike. Home economics literacy is one of the strategies that can help build healthier, more productive and more creative individuals who seek to achieve a sustainable quality of life. Parents agree that home economics subjects are very important in everyday lives and that children gain relevant knowledge in home economics classes that improves their quality of lives as individuals. The master's thesis aims to find out what parents feel about the needs they recognize in terms of home economics education and their attitude to home economics education as such. The data was collected by interviewing parents using a qualitative research method. The survey was conducted with six parents (5 mothers, 1 father) of children attending primary and secondary school and university. The quantitative research was based on a descriptive survey method using the interview technique. The research results revealed that the parents find it important for children to gain general knowledge and skills by the time they leave primary school that will enable them to lead fulfilling lives in family and social settings. Priority is given to school subjects that provide the subject matter and knowledge important for pursuing further education. The parents feel that children leaving primary school should, in addition to gaining important knowledge and skills in various areas of expertise, also possess a certain degree of home economics literacy. Pointing out food, financial, health and environmental literacy, the parents identified a need for school programmes to incorporate the subject matter and activities that facilitate the achievement of goals in terms of gaining knowledge and skills. If this is provided in school settings, the parents feel it is important for them to encourage their children to put the knowledge and skills acquired at school to practical use at home. According to the parents, inadequate home economics literacy can generally be attributed to the modern family life. The work-related responsibilities of parents and numerous engagements of children frequently lead to family time management problems. The parents see the benefits of home economics primarily in that individuals with relevant knowledge and acquired skills are able to maximize the quality of their lives, allowing them to lead responsible, independent lives. They highlighted the importance of developing social skills, which is essential for living a fulfilling life. The research results show that the parents approve of home economics topics being on the primary school curriculum. The parents also stressed that these topics could be taught in all the stages of education. In planning the goals and topics for home economics education, I believe that the needs of individuals and the society – as identified in the results of this master's thesis – should be taken into consideration.
