In our Master's thesis, we are dealing with the Drska neighborhood in Novo mesto, which is determined to require urban renovations, which aims to improve general living conditions. By reviewing the principles and importance of public participation in spatial planning within democratic societies, we justify the meaningfulness of participatory renewal. The present legal framework is presented in the work, and how public involvement in spatial projects is regulated in Slovenia. Domestic and foreign examples of participatory renovations of neighborhoods are presented, as well as the model and methods of public inclusion that can be used in the processes of participatory spatial planning are discussed. As a starting point of the participatory renovation we carried out a research survey in which we determined opinions of the inhabitants to the selected spatial aspects, as well as the ideas and wishes of the inhabitants for new spatial arrangements and their willingness to participate in the following planning procedures. The results confirmed the working hypothesis, namely the information obtained is useful in the process of following renovations and the engagement of the inhabitants for cooperation is high. We proposed guidelines for the following renovation procedures.
