Abstract

Title:Nutritional counselling as part of multidisciplinary treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease : literature review
Abstract:
Introduction: Parkinson's disease is a chronic, slowly progressing neurodegenerative disease. Levodopa is the gold standard drug therapy, but low-protein diet also plays an important role in treatment. Nurse is involved in treatment and has an important role. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma is to present Parkinson's disease and importance of the diet in connection with disease. Methods: We used a descriptive method and a review of the literature on the subject. We searched for sources of English and Slovenian professional and scientific literature from years 2005-2017. Discussion and conclusion: Motoric ability swings are consequence of progression of Parkinson's disease where patients are treated with levodopa. They occur after taking the medicine, as sudden change from the maximal motor function to the state of immobility, tremor and rigidity. Low-protein diet reduces the occurrence of motoric ability swings, because levodopa has a better effect due faster absorption. Some of components of protein food compete with levodopa for intestinal absorption and transport across the blood-brain barrier. The emphasis is on protein input at dinner and reduction of proteins in the morning and in the afternoon. An important role in the treatment of Parkinson's disease covers a nurse. She explain patients the meaning of the low-protein diet and offers them support.
