Introduction: Pregnancy is a special period in the life of every woman. Each accepts it a bit differently. It is important to ensure all the necessary nutrients to the body for normal functioning, and growth and development of the fetus. A menu has to be carefully planned every day. Vegetarian nutrition is becoming more and more widespread in Slovenia too. A pregnant woman has to be informed well about all the food, for this is the only way for her to create a balanced menu, which will serve to all the energy needs of the body. Still, there is a belief that vegetarian nutrition is inappropriate for a pregnant woman, even though there is no concern about the lack of vitamins and minerals if the planning of the nutrition is appropriate. In addition, vegetarian nutrition can reduce the possibility of certain diseases. Purpose: The purpose of the bachelor’s thesis is to study the data on the safety of the vegetarian nutrition during pregnancy. Methods of work: In the bachelor’s thesis, a descriptive method with the review of scientific and professional literature is used, as well as the causal-non-experimental method with the review of professional articles which described the influence of vegetarian nutrition on the course of pregnancy and the development of the fetus. Thus, we wished to confirm or reject the set hypotheses. The literature in Slovene and English language, including the older one, is used, for we were curious, how the field of nutrition was researched and described in past years. The time period between 1992 and 2017 was covered. Results: The analysis of the professional articles and the literature showed that in case of the appropriate planning of the menus, vegetarian nutrition can be healthy and appropriate for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. If the menus are planned appropriately the risk for the lack of nutrients which consequently leads to anemia is reduced. In the opposite case – if the nutrition is not balanced – a lack of nutrients in the body can cause defects in fetuses. A well planned nutrition enables the absorbance of sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals. However, some of them need to be added in spite of that, such as folic acid or B12 among vegans. Discussion and conclusion: With regards to the vegetarian style of nutrition, the opinions are divided. Some support it, while others reject it precisely because of the following circumstances: if a pregnant woman is not properly informed, a lack of nutrients can occur in the body: consequently anemia or defects in growing fetuses can occur. If a pregnant woman is well informed about the nutrition and plans her menus carefully, so that she ingests appropriate quantities of all the nutrients, the risk for the lack of nutrients is smaller. With respect to the milk and dairy products, the authors of the researches do still not agree, even though a lot of literature speaks on behalf of the harmfulness of milk.
