Abstract

Title:Hydraulic system for the autonomous sailboat
Abstract:
This paper is about constructing an autonomous surface vessel that will take part in the International Microtransat Challenge Race. The race aim is to cross the Atlantic Ocean with fully autonomous and unmanned sailing boat. The diploma work introduces the design and testing of the hydraulic device whose function is the rotating of two sail wings and the rudder of autonomous sailboats. Furthermore the installation of the hydraulic device in the 3D hull of the vessel was also designed. My diploma works shows individual steps in the process of the design of the hydraulic system from the construction to the final choice of individual components of the system. The designed process of installation and the principle of operation of the hydraulic system are fully described. There are also calculations and measurements to determine the adequacy of the operation of the hydraulic system. Analytical and experimental results are matched conditionally. Problems in the experimental results were caused by internal leakage in hydraulic motors, which means that we could not meet the standards of the requirements with the selected hydraulic motors. Three key requirements were: to provide a torque of 40 Nm on the masts and the steering wheel, to maintain the external torque of 40 Nm on the masts and the steering and the precision of the turning of the masts and rudder +/- 1 °. Under given operating demands, we assured 10.2 Nm of torque on masts and steering, but we could not keep the external torque, and we were not able to retain the accuracy with the selected orbital hydraulic motors.
