Abstract

Title:Parental awareness of sun protection for preschool children : a literature review
Abstract:
Introduction: Ultraviolet radiation plays an important role in pathogenesis of different types of skin cancer. Early primary prevention is of major importance because children skin is more sensitive to harmful influence of sun rays. Therefore, parents are the main target group in skin cancer prevention. Purpose: The purpose of thesis is to establish the level of parental sun protection awareness. Methods: We have used descriptive method. There was also done an overview and analysis of domestic and foreign professional and scientific literature. The used literature was mostly in English language, it was searched for in databases CINAHL and Medline and with the help of internet browser Google Scholar. Results: Although parental sun protection knowledge has been improving over the years, children protection in still insufficient. The most frequent sun protection measure is the use of sunscreen even though it is placed last by its importance. Many parents protect their children better on the beach than at home when playing outside. Sun protection decreases inversely proportional to the increasing age of a child. Discussion and conclusion: Teaching and advising parents about sun protection measures is very important because by doing so we increase children protection against harmful sun rays. It is also significant to raise awareness of appropriate sun protection and the fact that sun is harmful even when playing in the courtyard or in kindergarten. Sun protection programs should also include information about healthy lifestyle. To make these programs even better, there should be done more research that would fill our knowledge about the level of parental sun protection awareness in our country and also abroad.
