Abstract

Title:Status and role of religious education in public schools in Slovenia and neighbour countries
Abstract:
After World war two religion education in Slovenia has been forbidden. Until today the status of such subject has not been arranged in public educational system, which makes us (and few other countries) a unique case in Europe where religion education is mostly arranged. During obligatory school education children currently can choose a non-confessional obligatory elective subject Religion and ethics, which is implemented only in few of Slovenian primary schools. Slovenian society thus stays without education about world religion and views within its systematic level. In the days of pluralism and meetings of different cultures it is necessary that we deal with questions about religion in Slovenian society because of its importance in formatting a person, culture, nation and finally also a civilization. The thesis shows the case of arrangement of religious education in neighboring countries, where it is provided mostly as a confessional subject in public education system. In our case confessional activity is forbidden by law. Through the insight and presentation of Slovenian legislation that is regulating the issues of religion, religious freedom, religious communities and finally religious education, the author tries to find possible solutions so that religious education would find more validity in Slovenian space.
