The aim of the thesis is to investigate the students' reception of the Animal Science masters programme at the Biotechnical faculty, University of Ljubljana, and their opinion on the gained competencies, as well as the suggestions for changing the methods and contents of the programme. An additional objective of the thesis is to provide a design for a new subject that would be based on an active didactic methods and would enable students to develop competencies and integrate theory with practice, as well as to work on real problems from the profession. Methodologically the project was carried out by a literature overview and the implementation of a focus group, which we finalized with a conceptualization of a new subject with the students. As a basis for the new subject, we have carried out a student research project called the Zootechnical Challenge. All the participating students in the project were invited one year after the performance to write down their reflections on the Challenge. We conclude that the growing changes in society as well as in the study of agriculture should be implemented and updated in the programme faster. Students feel a critical lack of contact with practical work and therefore do not feel competent to enter the labour market. Accordingly, the students who participated in the focus group have expressed a clear desire for changes in the content and implementation of the study programme. The active didactic methods and the design of a new subject seem to them an appropriate way of updating their studies.
