The theme of the master thesis is the problem of design and development of types suitable for use in media for children. Given that children are our future, it is of utmost importance we make reading easier for them in a way which would lead to the improvement of communication skills and visual culture. Typography and language connect people every day, while design upgrades their lives.
To reach optimal results of communication tools, it is required to include areas of ergonomy, linguistics, visual communication, typography and graphic design. The theoretical part focuses on the issues of reading, children’s difficulties while reading, and the basic characteristics of designing for children. The practical part features a type designed for children, which allows them easier reading at the beginner level, and therefore motivates them to continue reading. A special attention is given to the adaptation of the type to Croatian language. The experimental part consists of testing the type with a target group of children. The recognition of letters, time required for reading and the number of mistakes were measured, the type was graded and the participants’ opinions were documented. The results of the research show a small advantage of the typeface Hop in comparison to the standard type used in Croatian schools.
