The aim of this diploma thesis titled “The making of smart packaging for sunscreen products” was to design and create smart packaging that will warn it’s user about the harmful effects of UV radiation – mainly because exposure to UV radiation is one of the primary causes of developing skin cancer.
Theoretical work consist of defining the terms “packaging” and “smart packaging” and describing packaging materials, which were later also used for our packaging. We also described electrophotography printing, UV indicator and programs that are used in packaging production and designing. We included the regulations for cosmetic labeling and researched Slovenian and foreign markets regarding the use of sunscreen.
Practical part of our work was focused on making the secondary sunscreen packaging. We designed labels for three different factors of sunscreen, which are inserted in secondary packaging. We found the most appropriate UV indicator and incorporated into our secondary packaging. Our final product is composed of secondary packaging and three different sunscreens with three different sun protection factors. UV indicator that warns us about applying the sunscreen is included on top of the secondary packaging.
