Abstract

Title:
Modern manufacturing of books in 21 century
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to describe all the steps required in a modern, digitalized book production – the printed word in the 21st century. We described some of the practical methods, which are in use by one of the biggest print/book production companies in Slovenia. This work presents the latest, state of the art procedures and processes which can be find in all three branches of the print production workflow: prepress, offset printing and postpress/finishing. The last step is also one of the most extensive and complex tasks in the book manifacturing process. In order to understand the process from head to toe, we examined the whole production line. A huge part of the research was also working with the machines, which are described in this work. We also included some small parts of production from some other, much smaller printing company, which does not have its own bookbinding line. The half-finished products must be sent to another company to finish them. We have also analized some of the most common problems, which can occure druing the printing process. This work describes some of the causes and solutions, which are often used in the real world. The thesis stops on every required step and presents the final result of it. From a sheet of paper to a vacuum-packed book, just like the one you can find in your favourite bookstore.
