Abstract
V diplomskem delu sem obravnavala nadarjene učence, posebej matematično nadarjene, njihove značilnosti, prepoznavanje nadarjenih in delo z njimi.

Title:School mathematics knowledge and the competition mathematical Kangaroo
Abstract:
Every year elementary school students, who are interested in mathematics and enjoy solving mathematical tasks and problems, take part in the International Mathematical Competition Kangaroo. It is reasonable to assume that students’ achievement on the International Mathematical Kangaroo Competition are conditioned by school-mathematics knowledge, and are thus correlated with students’ achievement on National Assessment or with school grades, although the Kangaroo competition tasks differ from common school exercises. However, it may happen that a student with a good mark in mathematics does not achieve good results in the International Mathematical Kangaroo Competition or vice versa. In fact, a mathematically gifted student may be a low achiever in school. In the thesis I considered the gifted students, in particular the mathematically gifted, how to recognize them and how to engage them in school-work. I also presented the mathematical competition Kangaroo. In the empirical part of the thesis I compared the students’ achievement at the mathematical competition Kangaroo with the respective achievement at the National Assessment in Mathematics. I found that there is a significant correlation between the two achievements. A questionnaire on the students' opinion on the mathematical competition Kangaroo revealed that students who did not participate in the competition felt that they would participate if they had a better grade in mathematics. Only a few students believe that the Kangaroo tasks can be solved by everyone, irrespective of school grades, since they are simple and require a little logical thinking. Most students believe that only those who have a good mark in mathematics can be successful at the mathematical competition Kangaroo. The most common reasons for applying to the Kangaroo Mathematical Competition is the interest in mathematics and the wish to win a recognition.
