Abstract

Title:A comparative analysis of Heidi and Kekec in children's literature and film adaptations
Abstract:
We can find many similarities in Heidi (1881), written by the Swiss author Johanna Spyri, and Kekec na volčji sledi (1922), part of Kekčeve zgodbe, written by Josip Vandot in main and side characters and in the cultural context. Those are the main two areas I was paying attention to in this master’s degree thesis. The original works were also adapted into film and picture books where we can observe the transfer from one medium to another. The theoretical part starts with children's literature, where I was paying attention to different definitions and problems within the area. Next I wrote about the new area of children's literature, called comparative children's literature. I used the work of an Irish author Emer O'Sullivan. My focus was mainly on multimedia studies of children's literature, where I discussed film as a singular art. I also described the theory of adaptation. In the practical part of the thesis I focused on the cultural context in original works and on similarities and differences between original works and literal (Heidi, 2014; Kekec in Pehta, 2011) and film (Heidi, 2005; Srečno, Kekec!, 1963) adaptations. With that I connected the student’s ideas of main and side characters and summarised the main findings about the fact that the student’s ideas are more similar to adaptations (mainly film) than to original works.
