Intention of this work is to present an overview of options to replace existing commercial relational databases in Smart-Grid Head-End Systems with open source solutions.
Initially, the digitalization of Power Grids is described and the importance of data storage technologies in such systems. History of the development of data storage systems and history of open source initiative is outlined. A list of available open source relational databases is made and, according to selection criteria, candidates are chosen. For these candidates some basic and advanced features are described.
In order to support the decision, a response time measurement procedure for some typical and critical operations in existing HES is described, namely hardware and software preparation, measurement application development and measurement execution. Measurement results are presented in a tabular and graphical fashion. On the basis of these results a performance scoreboard is assembled.
