Abstract

Title:Headline foregrounding in sports reporting
Abstract:
The thesis aims at identifying and analysing foregrounded elements which are made to stand out from the text in which they occur in the process of foregrounding, by means of new, fresh, unusual linguistic features. Foregrounding is one of the key stylistic processes of news reporting style. An attempt is made to find foregrounded features in headlines, the eye catching part of the newspaper page that is produced in special circumstances and performs several functions: summarizes the story to inform the reader, attracts the reader to the story and (if appearing on the front page) persuades the reader to buy the newspaper. Headlines are usually written under pressure and the space they occupy is very limited, which is why they developed a range of devices, many of which are foregrounded elements that are otherwise unusual in informative reporting genres. The analysis focuses on sports reporting texts produced in a distinctive extralinguistic context, the so-called stylistic factors of sports reporting: audience of unprofessional sports (game) experts and the subsequent need for specialization of sports journalists, the question of distance to sport and athletes, to name a few. The results of the analysis on two qualities Delo and The Times confirmed that there are no major differences between Slovenian and English foregrounded headlines and that foregrounded headlines are numerous and versatile, which is in line with the function they perform.
