Abstract

Title:First aid knowledge among football coaches of youth teams at the most common injuries of football players
Abstract:
Introduction: Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Every year it is played by more and more children. Physical activity has quite a few benefits, but there is also greater risk of injury. In youth football trainings and matches, there is usually only one coach present, without any doctor. So it is very important for him to know how to react if injury occurs. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to find out what theoretical knowledge of first aid there is among youth football coaches and also how they would react in case of an injury. Methodology: The used method was descriptive; it began with literature review. The accessibility of home literature was checked by COBISS database and the accessibility of foreign literature and articles was checked by MEDLINE, PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane databases. After literature review, a questionnaire based on literature was structured. The questionnaire was later sent by an e-mail to Slovenian football coaches. Results: Our study involved 100 Slovenian youth football coaches with an average age of 33.2 years. Most of the coaches asked already had experiences with skin damage; some of them were already faced with soft tissue injuries and bone injuries, and only few of them have already had some experience with unconsciousness. In spite of that, more than 70% of them would react properly if unconsciousness occurred. 99% of all football coaches included in the survey had answered the question about emergency of 112 calling and ambulance transport to hospital correctly. Discussion: In this study, youth football coaches have shown satisfactorily knowledge of first aid. There was no significant difference between football coaches of younger teams and coaches of older teams. Most common injury in football is ankle sprain. It occurs more often in older youth football teams. According to the questionnaire, coaches know how to react properly if ankle sprain occurs.
