Abstract

Title:Pre-service teachers' knowledge of alergic diseases
Abstract:
A great part of the school staff is not aware enough of the fact how serious the problem of allergic diseases can be. Furthermore, they are even not trained to be able to react appropriately, especially in case of an anaphylaxis. There should be more done to train the teachers in order to make them able to recognize and to take steps in case of such allergic diseases. This thesis is trying to analyse to what extent do students – pre-service teachers – know and understand allergic diseases in children in current education system. Since, there is a strong possibility that these pre-service teachers will have to take quick and efficient measures if an allergic child comes in contact with an allergen and it comes to an allergic diseases. The difference in this kind of knowledge among first and fourth year students as well as among students studying natural and human sciences will be tested. The theoretical part presents the concepts highlighting the problem. And the empirical part shows the results of the research that were gathered by the questionnaire for students called »Development of teachers' healthcare competencies – allergies«. The data were analysed by the SPSS programme. Some metric characteristica of the questionnaire and the identified students' knowledge and opinion about allergies were determined. The sample consists of 572 students of both genders, studying at the Ljubljana Faculty of Education, who are pre-service teachers of different subjects. The results reveal the fact that natural science students know about the allergic topics better than their colleagues from human science programmes. But the difference is tiny. Similar results were obtained in comparison between the first and fourth year students whereby the latter gained a little better results. The difference was tiny again. A more considerable difference occurred when a comparison between girls and boys regarding their knowledge about allergy topics was made. Girls had better knowledge of allergologic diseases than boys.
