This thesis first provides a brief biography of Maria Montessori and touches on her delicate views and respectful attitude towards children. Those characteristics are also reflected in her educational concept. Moreover, it discusses the work with Montessori materials in arithmetic and summarizes the mathematics curriculum, especially the area of arithmetic, for the first grade of Montessori primary school. It touches on early mathematics, which revolves around play so children can grasp and understand learning content more effortlessly.
As for the practical part of the thesis, it analyses the level of understanding of arithmetic-related notions among first grade pupils who use Montessori materials during lessons to complement the learning process and among first grade pupils who do not use Montessori materials.
The main question is whether materials have an impact on the children's success in completing worksheets. The aim of the tasks is to assess the understanding of basic mathematical notions.
