Abstract

Title:A comparison of primary school students' attitudes about the use of traditional print and e-textbooks in biology instruction
Abstract:
Since the schools are increasingly introducing e-textbooks into their practice, we wanted to investigate the attitudes of primary school students about the use of the printed and electronic textbooks in biology instruction. Studets' attitudes were compared according to gender, students' grades in subject of biology and if they use e-textbook in biology instruction or not. In this thesis, we focused on the 8th grade students of two primary schools in the surrounding area of Ljubljana. We interviewed pupils of one primary school which are using e-textbooks, and students from other primary school, which are using classical education with the use of a printed textbook in biology instruction. By analyzing the questionnaires we gained information that can serve for additional research about the role, e-textbooks would have in schools, if they would completely replace printed textbooks. In general, we can not state that students would prefer to use e-textbook over a printed textbook. Slightly higher acceptance of e-textbooks was found for girls. Students' grades signifficantly affect their attitudes about the use of textbooks. Students with higher grades show higher acceptance of printed textbooks in biology instruction. But the later is not true for the acceptance of e-textbooks. Students who are using e-textbooks in biology instruction do not show more positive attitudes than students who never or rarely use such learning materials.
