The thesis is titled Wordless Picture Books and consists of a theoretical and empirical part. Firstly, three different theories on picture books are represented. There are many different definitions of picture books. They are divided according to the quantity of the text, the creative process and the interaction between the text and the illustrations. In addition the paratext of picture books is described. Secondly, two examples of wordless picture books titled Dvanajst mesecev and Deček in hiša are analyzed using the theory by Marija Nikolajeva. Furthermore in the empirical part there are three activities described. These are »reading« wordless picture books, creating one's own illustration of previously read wordless picture books and creating one's own picture book.
In the empirical part two children, a boy and a girl (both of them 7 years old), and two adults, a woman (46 years old) and a man (52 years old) participated in the “reading” activity. All of them “read” wordless picture books Dvanajst mesecev and Deček in hiša to me and told me how they interpreted the story. Later, I compared their interpretations. Besides that, the boy and the girl also created their own illustrations of the wordless picture books they read. Last but not least, the children create their own picture book as well.
