Analysing some recent sociological literature on globalisation, the paper tries to answer two questions. The first question is related to the conceptualisation of the temporal dimension of globalisation and the second one to the relationship between the concepts of modernisation and globalisation. The answer to the first question is based on a claim that the prevailing sociological idea of globalisation is characterised by strong "presentism", i.e. it pays almost no attention to the historical forms of globalisation. The answer to the second question argues that the concept of globalisation is inextricably linked to the "traditional" sociological concept of modernization. Thus, the current sociological discussions of globalisation are to a large extent a continuation - although very often couched in a new terminology - of the grand sociological debate of modernisation and its futures.
