Abstract

Abstract:
Reading can greatly influence an individual, their academic achievements as well as their personal development. Librarians in elementary schools organise various activities for their visitors to motivate them to read and visit libraries more often. A detailed description of such activities is available in the Šolska Knjižnica (School Library) magazine and websites of individual school libraries. Research, which was conducted in February in 2016, was aiming to study the most common forms of activities organised by elementary school librarians. 131 librarians participated in the survey in a questionnaire form, which also researched the origin of their idea for a certain activity, how often it is organised, the number of participants, what age groups are included in an activity and why, how many of them also organise activities for adult population (parents and school employees) and who assists them in the organisation. Based on the results the librarians are aware of their role in motivating their participants for reading and are active in the field. They mainly organise activities for students of first and third triennial of education to encourage reading. The research also disclosed librarians are often assisted by the teachers and other employees in schools in organising the activities, while some of the librarians organise activities for adults (parents, teachers and other employees). A collection of various activities and the research findings can act as basis for librarians in organising activities to motivate their visitors for reading and visiting libraries, and improve their practice.
