Abstract

Title:APPROACHES OF ACHIEVING A LEAN MANUFACTURING
Abstract:
We are living at a time where product prices are constantly being pushed down. The number of articles and services providers is rising and competition is fierce. Some of these providers are able to tackle such issues by moving their production to countries with a cheaper workforce. Production optimisation is not a priority as long as the workforce in that country is actually cheaper. However, others are seeking hidden reserves and trying to save money, thereby helping to reduce the final price of the product. It should also be emphasised that the latter option safeguards jobs, which is important for every environment. The thesis deals with the optimisation of the production of the Global People Meter (GPM), which is a television audience measurement tool. We used the lean manufacturing method and successfully reduced the costs of the production. The company lacked knowledge of lean production, which is why we opted for an intense training course for the people involved in the project. In this respect, the lecturers from the Slovenian Institute of Quality and Metrology provided excellent support with education, advice and ideas. The main idea behind optimisation that leads to lean manufacturing is that the project involves as many different people and/or units as possible. As a result, the entire production process can be put in a wider perspective to prevent several new problems from emerging after solving one. The production of our product was being optimised throughout the production chain from the purchase and production phase to storage. Our efforts resulted in maximal savings because every operation connected to the product was taken into account. The thesis is organised in the following way. The introductory part presents the production and the product that measures television audience. The second chapter outlines the vital information relevant to lean manufacturing. The third chapter analyses the production before optimisation, while the fourth presents the improvements we detected and implemented to meet the requirements of lean manufacturing. The last chapter summarizes the key measures and activities and discusses the savings. It also touches some of the future plans.
