Abstract

Title:Song repertoire in the first school-education period of elementary school
Abstract:
Singing is an activity with which we develop our musical abilities, skills and knowledge, the progress of our interest in music, and which helps us mould our view on musical culture. The choice of repertoire plays a decisive role in influencing a child’s interest in singing. It is important that the teacher, while creating a singing repertoire, takes into consideration the artistic value, diversity and the developmental appropriateness of the songs. In this master’s thesis we shall conduct research into whether teachers have gained sufficient knowledge in creating a singing repertoire; do teachers update their vocal repertoire of songs; which criteria teachers use for creating a singing repertoire; which songs are most sung by students in music class; what are the students’ opinions on singing in class and whether teachers want the school syllabus to include a list of proposed songs. The research was carried out with a quantitative research approach. We collected data by means of a questionnaire for teachers working on the first educational level of elementary school and a questionnaire for students who attend the first, second or third grade of elementary school. We attended 5 music lessons, at which the main theme will be learning a new song. Research results show that teachers gained sufficient knowledge of how to create a vocal repertoire during their study; they mainly lacked skills in reading notation. We found that most teachers update their singing repertoire at least once every three years. Teachers working at an elementary level find that songs’ melody, voice range, rhythm, text, tempo and artistic quality of the songs are all important when choosing a song. Our research has led us to the following: students like to sing in classroom and that the songs covered in class appeal to them. They prefer to sing songs about animals, while singing they like to move around and play instruments. Students have expressed a desire to learn even more songs during the school year. The most frequently performed song in the school year 2014/15 was the song by Janez Kuhar – Jaz imam pa goslice. The research findings also contribute as guidelines for the future upgrading of school syllabuses, as we have determined that primary school teachers want that the curriculum of music classes includes a list of suggested songs. The acquired results represent a contribution to the field of the didactics of music, especially in the area of musical activities of singing on elementary school level.
