Abstract
Diplomska naloga obravnava tematiko video kodiranja. Opisani so različni video kodirni standardi in postopki zgoščevanja video vsebine. Največ poudarka sem namenil novemu kodirnemu standardu H.265/HEVC ter njegovem predhodniku H.264/AVC. Uvod dela sem začel z osnovnimi tehnikami, ki jih uporabljamo pri zgoščevanju videa, opisal pa sem tudi postopek zgoščevanja statičnih slik. Izpostavil sem najpogostejši standard JPEG. Nadaljeval sem z zgoščevanjem gibljive slike ter opisom standardov MPEG-1, MPEG-2 ter MPEG-4. Sledila je primerjava danes najbolj uporabljenega video kodirnega standarda H.264/AVC z njegovim naslednikom H.265/HEVC. Najprej sem teoretično opisal oba standarda. Tukaj sem naredil poudarek na kodirnih orodjih, ki jih oba standarda vključujeta pri video kodirnem procesu. V zadnjem poglavju sem izvedel še test med H.264/AVC in H.265/HEVC. To sem naredil tako, da sem s pomočjo programov Hybrid in Handbrake, ki vsebujeta x264 ter novi x265 kodek, subjektivno ovrednotil kvaliteto novega HEVC kodirnika.

Title:Comparison of video coding standard H.264 AVC and H.265 HEVC
Abstract:
My thesis deals with the topic of video coding. I describe different video coding standards and processes of video compression, mainly focusing on the new H.265/HEVC coding standard and its predecessor H.264/AVC. In the introduction, I present the basic techniques that are used in video compression and I also describe the process of still image compression, emphasizing on the most common of them – the JPEG standard. I continue with the process of moving image compression and a description of its various standards: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. I follow that up with a comparison of the most-used video coding standard today, H.264/AVC, to its successor, H.265/HEVC, first within a theoretical description of the both and then focusing on the coding tools that are used by both standards in the video coding process. In the last chapter, I perform a test between H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC, using the Hybrid and HandBrake program, both of them containing the x264 codec and the new x265 codec, in order to subjectively evaluate the quality of the new HEVC encoder.
