Based on scientific literature, this thesis deals with the development of educational thought, the creation of kindergartens, and views on child education in preschool institutions through Slovenian history from 1756 until today. We provided arguments in the second part of the thesis, based on selected children’s and/or youth texts aimed for children and young people, encompassing elements adapted to the young readers’ capabilities.
Children, model of education, family education and upbringing in kindergarten have historically been viewed differently, depending on the economic, political and cultural changes. With the help of books of selected authors from certain historical periods (1850 - 1900, 1900 - 1950, 1950 - 1980 and 1980 - 2010), we wanted to identify the characteristics of childhood, education and the family in the relevant periods. For each period we have selected and interpreted the three representative works describing the situation of that time in the chosen field.
We discovered that youth literature was changing, together with the social environment. Based on the representative works we discovered that in the 19th century families were more numerous, and consequently childhood was a difficult period. The period before the Second World War was characterized by a cultural transmission educational model, where children occupied the lowest position in the family. The period that followed the Second World War brought many changes that contributed to the improvement of the child position in the society. Today children have legal rights but this does not mean that the childhood period is ideal for all children.
