Abstract

Title:Primary school pupils awareness about environmental pollution in Zasavje, Slovenia
Abstract:
Nowadays, the major cities are burdened with emissions from vehicles and factories and industrial plants. Various toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide, are pollutants and the main cause for the increasing pollution in towns in Slovenia. Zasavje region lies in the central part of Slovenia and comprises of surrounding hilly landscape along the Sava river, which is also a major reason for increased pollution. Due to the poor regional airflow it keeps the air pollution in the basin. In this diploma paper with title Primary school pupils awareness about environmental pollution in Zasavje, Slovenia, the theoretical part presents concepts that illuminates a given problem. In the empirical part of the thesis the results of the survey are presented, which was conducted ina form of a questionnaire in three selected primary schools. One school was selected from the polluted area (Trbovlje), the second from the partly polluted area (Izlake) and a third from less polluted area (Roman Thermae) (Agencija Republike Slovenije za okolje, 2013). We examined what is their knowledge of the toxic and hazardous substances and their awareness of and attitudes to pollution of the local environment. The results showed that the majority of students are properly informed about local environmental issues, knowledge of the toxic and hazardous substances is in the light of learning content, dealt with in school, satisfactory. They have a positive position towards their environment, as they are positive to any changes that could affect the reduce of environmental pollution. They are also willing to do something by themselves to reach this aim. Between boys and girls of all three schools there were no statistically significant differences. Students of OŠ Tončke Čeč have more negative attitudes to their own local environment than students of the other two schools and according to sex, positions are similar and do not differ much.
