Abstract
Podoba, status in predstava o delu knjižničarja so pogosto obravnavane teme v strokovni literaturi.

Abstract:
The image, status and perception of librarians are topics that are often discussed in professional literature. The image of the librarian is supposedly bad, the bad image is perceived as one of the causes for the low status of librarians and the wrong perception about the work is supposed to be responsible for both, the bad image and low status. The purpose of this study was to establish how the Slovene public perceives the profession of the librarian, the image and the status of librarians and the opinion about the required education and skills that librarians are supposed to posses. As a part of the study we used two different research methods, the survey, which captured a sample of 200 participants with the help of online questioners and the focus groups with students, employed people and retired people. The results of the study showed that the image of librarians is only consistent with the positive stereotypes about the profession. The public perceives the professions reputation, and with that also the status, as low. They also stated that they know the work of the librarian somewhere in the middle and that they perform more then just classic library tasks. The public is also of the opinion that librarians need to have a higher and professional library education. The image we got with the help of the study is better than expected; still there is a little haziness around the nature of the profession. The public perceives it as administrative work and the librarians supposedly lack communication skills, the skills of leadership, the capability of accommodation and use of new technology and the knowledge about psychology and pedagogics. The study also showed the low status of the profession in Slovenia. To improve the knowledge about the profession and to raise its status the libraries should increase their exposure in the public and organise different kinds of presentations of the profession. To ensure the success of those activities there should be systematic studies about the status and the image of the librarians.
