Abstract

Abstract:
The purpose of the master's thesis is to point out problems and errors which appear in selection and formation of subject headings in the system WinKnj. On the basis of analyzed subject headings, we proposed a new subject heading list and rules for the creation of subject headings and glossary. The aim of the research was to find out the correctness of subject headings which librarians use by their work. The method of work which we used is the comparative analysis, because we selected subject headings compared to both glossaries, which are SSSG and SGC. The population of our survey were all headings that have been used in the system WinKnj, which contained 19,100 subject headings. For our sample we chose headings that appear 100 times or more, 305 subject headings in total. We found that our sample and SSSG matched in 89.5 % of subject headings, while the SGC matched in 81%. The usage of the singular and the plural was correct, so there is no problem, except with a few exceptions. The reason that there were so minimal differences is also in the fact that librarians copy records from COBIB.SI. Librarians poorly comply with IFLA principles underlying subject heading languages, mostly they don't consider the principles or consider them only partially or superficially. There are many duplicate subject headings that happen because of irregularly formed subject headings and mistakes, such as mistakes in number and initials, foreign language, misspellt, the appearance of subject headings in different versions. With a suitable designed subject heading list and rules, we will facilitate librarians% work and also reduce costs. Users will have more effective and easier search with more relevant search results.
