The main topics of this thesis are the gender confirmation or transsexuality and the diversity of gender identity. It is crucial to realize that there is not only male and female gender, but there are also many other gender identities, which people identify with.
The content of the thesis talks about the diversity of gender identity. The theoretical part consists of four parts. The first part presents some general information about gender, identity and sexuality. The final part introduces the main theme, namely transsexuality and it thoroughly examines it.
The qualitative research presents analysis and data from three interviews with individuals, who identify themselves as transgender or transsexual. The aim of the research is to determine what constitutes the identification of being transgender or the identification of being transsexual. It further researches how that affects mental and social state of an individual and how institutions and organizations support it. The aim of the research was also to make this topic more available to the society and to widen their knowledge about it.
The results show that interviewees find it crucial to medically confirm their gender and thus match their biological and social gender. They gain higher self-esteem and motivation for further life. They accept their body and therefore find it easier to engage in society and carry out their daily activities. Through the process of the gender confirmation, transgender or transsexual people face institutions and organizations that mainly hinder and discriminate them and do not have enough knowledge and compassion for diverse gender identities.
