The purpose of this thesis was to research the role of mass media in the relationship between Church and state for a longer period of time. It gives actual examples of the news items about the Roman Catholic Church on two religious festivals, Assumption Day and Christmas, broadcasted by Radio-television Slovenia (RTV Slovenija) in the evening news. The news items are classified according to the method of analyzing their content.
According to our research findings the independence of Slovenia and the consecutive change of the political system was a turning point of reporting about Roman Catholic Church on public TV Slovenia. No impact of different coalition government's structure was found out regarding the range and the content of the news items about Roman Catholic Church since Slovenia declared its independence. A detailed analysis of evening news items on Television Slovenia shows that when the Roman Catholic Church becomes an active political player it is represented rather tendentiously, in a more negative way. It is represented in a more positive way when the religious subjects in a narrow sense are reported.
