Abstract

Title:
The health of special education teachers in the Podravje region
Abstract:
Physiological condition is determined by intertwined factors which influence people in many different ways. A diet, risky use of nicotine and alcohol, the frequency and type of physical activity are all factors which can be controlled and indicate the quality of life as well as possible health risk. To determine physiological condition of special educational needs (SEN) teachers in the Podravje region we observed their behaviour styles. Sixty-one SEN teachers who work in the Podravje region were involved in the research. 38% of them work in classes with adapted programmes that provide education at a lower level, 15% of them work in special education programmes, and 47% of them are mobile SEN teachers working in one or more locations in the Podravje region. According to the findings they claim that their physiological condition is good. They are often ill during winter and they normally go to their family doctor (GP). They are on sick leave less than three days a year. Most common medical conditions are allergies and conditions affecting the spine and back. SEN teachers often feel tired, exhausted, they have headaches and they often claim their work is encumbered with administrative work and with bringing their work home. Majority of the teachers who were involved in the research are physically active. Almost half of them go for a walk at least twice a week. There are just few smokers among them. Most of the teachers have never smoked and there are many who have given up smoking. On the average, all of them have a BMI which indicates a normal diet and normal weight.
