The study tried to determine some of the characteristics
of students opting for the study of primary-level
teaching and social pedagogy. We wished to examine the
conformity of the characteristics of the students with the
competences that are important for carrying out their
future professions. The study included students of the
Faculty of Education in Ljubljana who were in October
2008 enrolled in the 1st year of primary-level teaching,
the 1st year of social pedagogy, and the 2nd year of
primary-level teaching. In all the groups of students
their character traits, attachment styles, and selfrespect
were determined. The results show that all three
groups of students have a relatively high degree of selfrespect
and that they mostly feel safe in interpersonal
relationships. The students of both courses and
generations achieve average results in the personality
dimensions of energy, susceptibility, conscientiousness,
and emotional stability, and low results in the dimension
of openness. It is important that the future experts
who will be working with people possess a high level
of susceptibility and openness, which was not the case
in the results of the study conducted on the students of
primary-level teaching and social pedagogy.
