Because of the irreversibility of globalization small countries have to adapt a strategy of quick and productive adaptation to an external environment, including productive imitation of technological leaders. With selection of appropriate policy, benefits of globalization outpace its costs (positive sum game). In a globalized economy small economies are even in a better position than ever before, if they choose the right policies. Promotion of inward, but more and more also outward foreign direct investment, is in such a strategy of utmost importance.
