Past development of cable skidding shows that forest cableways have a long tradition in Slovenia. The question, which arises, is what kind of a future wecan expect at the times when every kind of forest work is under auspices of the critical public. The paper deals with this particular question, and the interests of particular kinds of public and their potential role in cable use are analysed. The suggestions are made where the future role of cable skidding. In the first place are the efforts to improve the economy of cable skidding by decreasing costs through use of modern machines and equipment, better organisation, tighter connections with the Slovenian Forest Service andforest owners. In the second place are the efforts to make cable skidding more user- and environmentally friendly. The work should be carried out in ergonomically suitable way; it must be safe, with the use of proper equipment and techniques providing for more environmentally friendly skidding. Promotionof cable skidding will be increasingly important in the future. Theseactivities should emphasize the advantages of cable skidding in comparison with other options.
