In this dissertation the influence of open access (OA) on the citation of scholarly articles in the field of civil engineering was analysed. The research of scholarly publications of scientists and theachers at the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering from the University of Ljubljana determined that many of their articles are published in the upper half of international peer reviewed journals, ranked in appropriate subject group of JCR list. 19 % of them are openly accessible. In the research about the influence of OA on citation 2,242 articles from 18 international peer reviewed journals were analysed, 469 of them are open access (OA) articles, 1,773 are not open accessible (NOA). We can confirm the influence of OA on the number of citations mostly for articles and journals from the first quartille. In all other quartilles the statistical risk exceeds the allowed value of 5 %. We realized that OA is just one of many factors which influence the citation. Other factors are the number of authors, particulary of NOA articles, and the number of variations, in which the articles are acceptable to users for free via Google Scholar, and without restrictions. By researching the echo time, which is the period from publication of articles to the time of its first citation, measured in months, we realised that OA and NOA articles reached the first citations in the first year after publishing, but OA articles reached more of them. Both, OA and NOA articles, reached the highest number of citation in the third or fourth year after publication. The shortest echo time for OA articles is reached at 5 and for NOA articles at 13 months after publication. The research on one sample of 50 OA articles revealed that green OA, which is the archiving of articles in the digital institutional repositories, shortened the echo time. In context with all findings in 2011 the digital repository DRUGG was built at the UL FGG. At the end of 2013 among 2,032 documents 200 scholarly.
