Limitation of VOC emissions from wood industries demands extensive research activities in order to introduce surface coatings with a low content of VOCs. LIP Radomlje Company wants to substitute currently used solventbornes with waterborne finnishes. However, they have to coat oak wood which shows specific problems when coated with waterbornes (ring porous hardwood, tannins, etc.). Additional problem is that substitution of coatings may require adaptation of existing coating equipment or even acquisition of the new equipment. Larger number of specimens with waterborne coatings were prepared and compared to control samples, finishes with solventborne coatings. We wanted to find out if waterborne coats could represent a suitable substitution for organic solventborne finishes for oak. Among all the tested formulations 2 combinations could be applicable in the production (waterborne stain, waterborne base coat, waterborne surface finish; or waterborne stain, waterborne base coat, 2-pack universal waterborne finish).
