Abstract

Title:OPTIMISATION OF PROTOCOLS FOR AUTOMATED CONTACTLESS SYSTEMS FOR PERSON AND OBJECT IDENTIFICATION
Abstract:
In this paper, we will focus on the area of automatic Radio Frequency Identification Systems (RFID). In most systems, RFID communication is determined by international standards. One of the basic differences between the existing protocols is in the method of resolving simultaneous access to a common communication medium. The method of access to the common communication medium needs to be determined due to the nature of the RFID systems in which communication usually begins with several tags at the same time. Successful communication between the tag and the interrogator depends on two factors: the beginning of communication when the tag tries to establish communication with the interrogator and the quantity of the transferred data during the communication between the tag and the interrogator. Frequent data package collisions occur during such simultaneous transmission, which also implies a reduced throughput of the communication channel. Depending on the type of application, up to several hundred tags wishing to communicate with the interrogator can be found in the interrogator field at the beginning of communication, which makes collisions between the transmitted data packages imminent. In RFID protocols, the collision of data packages is regarded as unsolvable and as such represents a net loss in the communication channel throughput. To this end, RFID protocols comprise mechanisms for reducing the possibility of data package collisions. This paper is focused principally on the communication within the RFID system that is defined by the EPCglobal Class-1 Generation-2 standard. In this standard, the central protocol providing access to the common medium is the Dynamic Frame Slotted ALOHA (DFSA) Protocol. The key information for determining the optimum frame size for DFSA protocol optimisation is the number of tags in the interrogator's field. In order to increase the communication channel throughput during identification, various approaches attempting to make the best use of the information acquired from past communication performance. The most frequent solutions for DFSA protocol optimisation are based on the stochastic analysis of data from observed windows, where data indicate whether a window is successful, unsuccessful or empty. The problem with these methods is that the number of tags attempted to be transmitted in the window in which collision has occurred is not defined with precision but merely represent an estimate. The purpose of this work is to find a new approach to DFSA protocol optimisation in terms of determining the number of tags and decoding data packages in the event of collision. The work will be focused on optimising the existing protocol and finding new more optimal solutions. An analysis will be made of the existing methods used in determining the number of tags and recovering data packages in case of collision. We will devote particular attention to the methods that are not based on a probabilistic event analysis. In this respect, the most prominent methods are the Radar Cross Section Method, which tries to determine the number of tags in the interrogator's field by analysing the received signal and the most powerful signal methods intended for data package recovery in case of collision.
