The study aims to explore the problematics of care work, namely care work related to parenthood, and how it is connected to the balancing of paid work and family obligations. The paper is based on an analysis of statistical data, a secondary analysis of comparative empirical data and recent empirical studies by the authors. The multi-level analysis yielded insights into where Slovenia is situated compared to the Netherlands, Portugal, Great Britain and Sweden regarding public and organisational policies enhancing the reconciliation of paid work and family obligations. The first public policies supporting the reconciliation of paid work and family obligations were introduced in Slovenia just after the Second World War and have been improving up until recently. However, they were always gender-biased and had and still have serious implemental shortcomings on the organisational and individual levels. These are the reasons why the country's implementation of reconciliation policies at the organisational level is on a lower level than in the other countries, except Portugal.
