Abstract

Abstract:
In this contribution we have assumed that the differences in the understanding of the role and importance of education are influenced to a greater extent by the life and residential circumstances and social networks of the individual (especially family and neighbourhood) then his age. We have analysed the data from the researches on the social networks of the elderly in Slovenia. One of the points we have focused upon in our analysis were the characteristics of the learning habits within a family and amongst individuals (the generation of parents and grandparents) at two individual points of time (1987 and 2005). We have established that readiness to learn and the actual participation of the elderly in various study activities are on the decline with age. Regardless of the various external encouragements, the most important factors for further learning are the family values as regards learning and the individual's attitude towards learning that is formed throughout his life. The education level of the current generation of the elderly (grandparents) is significantly lower from the current education level of the middle aged adults (parents). On the basis of this we can assume that the future generations of older adults in Slovenia will be much better educated and thus also have a higher degree of motivation for education.
